Mixed Units Made Easy

Miles Per Litre Calculator

The Miles Per Litre Calculator is built for drivers who measure distance in miles but buy fuel in litres — a common situation in the UK and many other countries. Instead of juggling unfamiliar gallon conversions, you can work directly in the units shown on your odometer and at the pump.

Enter the miles driven since your last fill-up and the number of litres used, and the calculator instantly returns your miles per litre. It also translates that figure into the units you might want to compare against: equivalent US MPG, L/100km, and km/L. That makes it easy to benchmark your real-world economy against a manufacturer’s MPG rating or a metric review.

Miles per litre is calculated simply as miles ÷ litres. To get US MPG, we multiply by 3.78541, the number of litres in a US gallon. The L/100km figure is derived from that MPG using the standard 235.214 constant, and km/L comes from converting your miles to kilometres per litre. Tracking miles per litre over several fill-ups is one of the best ways to spot a drop in efficiency early — a sudden decline can signal under-inflated tyres, a dirty air filter, or a maintenance issue worth checking. Use this alongside our converter and UK MPG tools to keep every unit at your fingertips.

How to Use

  1. Enter the miles driven since your last fill-up.
  2. Enter the litres of fuel used.
  3. Click Calculate (or press Enter).
  4. Read your miles per litre plus equivalent MPG, L/100km, and km/L.

Miles Per Litre FAQ

Divide the miles you drove by the number of litres of fuel you used. For example, 200 miles on 25 litres = 8 miles per litre.

Multiply miles per litre by 3.78541 to get US MPG (one US gallon = 3.78541 litres). So 8 miles/litre ≈ 30.3 MPG.

Miles per litre measures distance in miles per litre of fuel, while km/L uses kilometres. Multiply miles per litre by 1.60934 to convert to km/L.

Drivers in the UK and other regions often fill up in litres but track distance in miles, so miles per litre is the natural everyday measure for them.

A litre is the same everywhere, so miles per litre itself is unit-neutral. The MPG conversion here uses US gallons (3.78541 litres). For Imperial MPG, see our UK MPG Calculator.
