MPG to L/100km Converter
The MPG to L/100km Converter bridges the gap between the imperial and metric ways of measuring fuel economy. In the US, fuel efficiency is quoted in miles per gallon, while most of the world uses litres per 100 kilometres. Comparing a US-spec car to a European review — or simply understanding a foreign road trip — gets much easier when you can switch units in a second.
This tool works in both directions. Enter a value in MPG and it returns the equivalent L/100km and km/L. Enter a value in L/100km and it converts back to MPG. The conversion uses the standard constant 235.214, where L/100km = 235.214 ÷ MPG, based on US gallons (3.78541 litres) and the mile-to-kilometre factor of 1.60934.
One thing to keep in mind: MPG and L/100km move in opposite directions. With MPG, a higher number is better because you travel farther per gallon. With L/100km, a lower number is better because you burn fewer litres over a set distance. The km/L figure behaves like MPG — higher is better. Use the reference table below for quick lookups, and pair this converter with our Miles Per Litre and UK MPG calculators for full coverage of every fuel-economy unit you might encounter.

MPG to L/100km FAQ
Use the formula L/100km = 235.214 ÷ MPG. For example, 30 MPG ≈ 7.84 L/100km. Note this is an inverse relationship: higher MPG means a lower L/100km value.
Use the same constant: MPG = 235.214 ÷ L/100km. For example, 8 L/100km ≈ 29.4 MPG. Our converter does this for you with the L/100km input field.
Kilometres per litre (km/L) measures how far you travel on one litre — higher is better, like MPG. It is calculated as (MPG × 1.60934) ÷ 3.78541.
This converter uses US gallons (3.78541 litres). UK Imperial gallons are larger; use our UK MPG Calculator for Imperial conversions.
L/100km measures fuel consumed per fixed distance, so an efficient car uses fewer litres — a lower number is better. This is the opposite of MPG, where higher is better.
