What Is Fuel Economy? MPG, L/100km, and km/L Explained

Fuel economy is one of those terms everyone uses but few people pause to define properly. Before you can compare vehicles intelligently, or make sense of a car review written for a different market, you need a solid grip on what fuel economy actually measures and why the same car can appear in three different numbers depending on where you live.

What Fuel Economy Actually Means

Fuel economy describes how efficiently a vehicle converts fuel into distance. At its core, the definition is simple: how far does the vehicle travel per unit of fuel consumed? A vehicle with strong fuel economy squeezes more kilometres or miles out of every litre or gallon. A vehicle with poor fuel economy burns through fuel quickly relative to the ground it covers.

The concept sounds straightforward, but the way different countries express it creates genuine confusion. The United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, India, and Southeast Asia all use different units, and two of the major systems run in opposite directions mathematically. Understanding each system on its own terms is the first step to making sense of international comparisons.

MPG: The US Standard

In the United States, fuel economy is measured in miles per gallon, almost always written as MPG. The figure tells you how many miles a vehicle can travel on a single US gallon of fuel (3.785 litres).

With MPG, a higher number is always better. A car rated at 40 MPG is more fuel-efficient than one rated at 25 MPG. The US Environmental Protection Agency publishes official MPG ratings for every new vehicle sold in the country, separating figures into city driving, highway driving, and a combined average. The combined figure is the one most commonly cited in reviews and advertising.

When Americans compare fuel costs across vehicles, MPG is the instinctive unit. Double the MPG and you roughly halve the fuel bill, which makes the arithmetic feel intuitive.

L/100km: The European and Australian Standard

Much of the world outside the United States, including Europe, Canada, and Australia, uses litres per 100 kilometres, written as L/100km. This unit flips the relationship: instead of asking how far you go on one unit of fuel, it asks how much fuel you burn to cover a fixed distance of 100 kilometres.

With L/100km, a lower number is better. A car consuming 5.0 L/100km is more efficient than one consuming 8.0 L/100km. A small, efficient hatchback might achieve 4.5 L/100km on the highway. A large SUV might consume 11 or 12 L/100km in city traffic.

Because L/100km is a consumption rate rather than an efficiency ratio, the mathematics work differently. Halving your fuel consumption does not halve the number; the relationship between L/100km and real-world savings is non-linear. This matters when you are trying to judge whether upgrading from a 10 L/100km vehicle to an 8 L/100km vehicle saves as much fuel as upgrading from a 6 L/100km vehicle to a 4 L/100km vehicle. Spoiler: the first upgrade saves considerably more fuel per kilometre driven.

km/L: The South and Southeast Asian Standard

India, Japan, and much of Southeast Asia measure fuel economy in kilometres per litre, written as km/L. Like MPG, this is an efficiency ratio: higher is better. A motorcycle achieving 40 km/L is more efficient than a car achieving 15 km/L.

The km/L and MPG systems share the same directional logic. Both reward higher numbers, which makes converting intuitions between them easier than converting between MPG and L/100km. A vehicle rated at 20 km/L is roughly equivalent to one rated at 47 MPG, since the only difference is the unit of volume (the litre versus the US gallon) and the unit of distance (the kilometre versus the mile).

UK MPG vs US MPG: A Critical Distinction

One comparison that trips up many people is UK MPG versus US MPG. Both look identical on the page but they measure different things, because the United Kingdom uses the Imperial gallon, not the US gallon.

The Imperial gallon is larger: 4.546 litres, compared to the US gallon’s 3.785 litres. That difference of about 20 percent means a car rated at 50 UK MPG is actually consuming more fuel per mile than a car rated at 50 US MPG. To convert UK MPG to US MPG, multiply by 0.8326. In practical terms, a British car review praising a vehicle for achieving 60 MPG translates to roughly 50 MPG by US measurement.

Whenever you read MPG figures in a British publication or on a vehicle originally sold in the UK, check which gallon is being used. Comparing UK and US MPG numbers directly without conversion will make British vehicles appear around 20 percent more fuel-efficient than they actually are by US standards.

MPGe: Fuel Economy for Electric Vehicles

As electric vehicles entered the mainstream, regulators needed a way to compare their efficiency against conventional petrol and diesel cars. The US EPA introduced MPGe, or miles per gallon equivalent, as the solution.

MPGe is based on the energy content of one US gallon of petrol, which contains approximately 33.7 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy. An electric vehicle’s MPGe rating tells you how many miles it can travel on 33.7 kWh of electrical energy. A vehicle rated at 100 MPGe is, in energy terms, three times as efficient as a petrol car rated at 33 MPG.

MPGe allows side-by-side comparisons in a familiar format, though the figure does not translate directly into electricity bills the way MPG translates into fuel costs. The actual running cost of an EV depends on local electricity prices, which vary far more than petrol prices do across different regions and times of day.

The formulas behind the table are:

  • L/100km from MPG: divide 235.215 by the MPG figure
  • km/L from MPG: multiply MPG by 1.60934, then divide by 3.78541

Why Fuel Economy Matters

The practical case for caring about fuel economy begins with money. Fuel is one of the largest ongoing costs of vehicle ownership, and small differences in efficiency compound into large sums over years of driving. A driver covering 15,000 miles per year in a vehicle rated at 25 MPG will consume 600 gallons annually. Swap to a vehicle rated at 35 MPG and that falls to roughly 429 gallons, a saving of 171 gallons every year. At typical fuel prices, that gap can easily amount to several hundred dollars in annual savings.

The environmental case is equally direct. Better fuel economy means less fuel burned, and less fuel burned means fewer carbon dioxide emissions per kilometre driven. Across a fleet of millions of vehicles, even modest improvements in average fuel economy translate to measurable reductions in greenhouse gas output. Regulatory bodies in the US, EU, and elsewhere have used fleet average fuel economy standards as one of the primary levers for reducing transport sector emissions over the past several decades.

Fuel economy also affects national energy security. Countries that reduce per-vehicle fuel consumption are less exposed to oil price shocks and supply disruptions, a consideration that has driven fuel economy policy in many major economies independent of environmental motivations.

Understanding the units your market uses, and knowing how to convert between them, makes you a more informed buyer, a more capable comparison shopper, and better positioned to evaluate the claims you encounter in reviews, advertising, and policy discussions.
