For 2024, the IRS standard mileage rate is 67 cents per mile for business driving. That figure is not just reimbursement for gas. It is the IRS’s comprehensive estimate of what each mile costs to drive when you factor in fuel, oil, tires, maintenance, repairs, and vehicle depreciation all together.

When you claim the standard mileage rate on your tax return, you are telling the IRS that 67 cents per mile is a reasonable approximation of your total per-mile vehicle operating cost. You do not need receipts for individual expenses. You simply track your business miles and multiply.

The rate is updated each year, and sometimes mid-year, when the IRS determines that fuel prices or vehicle costs have shifted enough to warrant a change. Before 2024, the rate was 65.5 cents per mile for 2023, and it has trended upward as vehicle and fuel costs have risen over time.

Your Actual Cost Per Mile vs the IRS Rate

Comparing your real cost per mile to the IRS rate matters most for business drivers. If your true all-in cost per mile is lower than 67 cents, claiming the standard mileage rate gives you a larger deduction than your actual expenses, which is entirely legal and often the smarter choice. How Rideshare and Delivery Drivers Should Use Cost Per Mile

For Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash drivers, cost per mile is not a tax planning tool. It is the number that tells you whether you are actually making money or quietly subsidizing your passengers’ and customers’ trips at your own expense.

The gross earnings figure the apps show you is not your income. You need to subtract what it costs to generate those earnings. Fuel is the most visible cost, but every mile you drive accelerates your vehicle’s depreciation, wears your tires, and adds to your maintenance cycle. The true question is: what is my net earnings per mile?

To calculate this properly, divide your total weekly operating costs, fuel plus a reasonable per-mile allocation for maintenance and depreciation, by your total miles driven that week, including deadhead miles when you are driving to pick up a passenger or order but earning nothing. Then compare that cost per mile against your earnings per mile.

A driver earning $0.85 per mile in gross fares but spending $0.55 per mile in real costs is making $0.30 per mile net. A driver earning $1.10 per mile but spending $0.90 per mile due to a gas-hungry vehicle is making only $0.20 per mile despite the higher gross. The vehicle choice matters far more than the raw earnings figure.

Fuel-Only Cost vs Total Cost of Ownership Per Mile

Fuel cost per mile is the easiest number to calculate, but it undercounts what driving actually costs. Total cost of ownership per mile adds up everything:

Fuel, insurance, registration and taxes, scheduled maintenance, tires, unscheduled repairs, financing interest if applicable, and depreciation. When researchers and financial advisors talk about the real cost of car ownership, they are typically looking at numbers between $0.50 and $0.80 per mile for average American vehicles at typical mileage levels, versus fuel-only costs that might be $0.10 to $0.20 per mile.

That gap between fuel-only and all-in cost is important context any time you make a driving decision based purely on gas spending. A zero-fuel-cost electric vehicle still has non-trivial insurance, depreciation, and maintenance costs that push its true cost per mile well above zero.

Using Cost Per Mile to Compare Two Vehicles Before Buying

Cost per mile gives you a disciplined framework for evaluating two vehicles against each other. Take the total five-year ownership cost for each vehicle, including purchase price minus projected resale value, insurance, fuel based on expected annual mileage, and maintenance estimates. Divide by expected total miles over five years.

A $28,000 compact sedan with 35 MPG might have a five-year total cost of $38,000 driven over 60,000 miles, producing a cost per mile of $0.63. A $42,000 SUV with 22 MPG might have a five-year total cost of $58,000 over the same mileage, producing a cost per mile of $0.97. The SUV costs 54 percent more per mile to operate despite costing only 50 percent more at purchase, because the fuel penalty compounds over every mile you drive.

This calculation becomes especially useful when comparing an efficient vehicle at a higher purchase price against a cheaper vehicle with worse fuel economy. Run both through the full five-year cost model and the cost-per-mile figure often reveals which option is genuinely cheaper in practice.

Monthly and Annual Projections From Your Cost Per Mile

Once you have your cost per mile, scaling it to a monthly or annual figure is straightforward.

If you drive 1,000 miles per month and your fuel cost per mile is $0.13, your monthly fuel bill is $130. If your all-in cost per mile is $0.65, your true monthly cost of driving is $650. Annualize that and you are looking at $7,800 per year in vehicle operating costs, which is a meaningful line item in any household budget.

For business drivers, annual mileage projections also tell you whether the standard mileage deduction or actual expense method will produce a larger deduction, which is worth calculating in advance rather than discovering at tax time.
