Fuel costs are one of the biggest ongoing expenses of motorhome ownership, and for good reason. RVs are large, heavy, and aerodynamically compromised vehicles that burn considerably more fuel than the average car or truck. Understanding what kind of mileage your rig actually gets, and what factors drive that number up or down, can save you hundreds of dollars on a long road trip and help you plan fuel stops with confidence.
Class A Motorhome MPG
Class A motorhomes are the full-size coaches you picture when someone says “luxury RV.” They sit on purpose-built or heavy-duty commercial chassis, stretch anywhere from 25 to 45 feet in length, and can weigh upward of 30,000 pounds when fully loaded. That combination of size and mass makes them the least fuel-efficient category of motorhome.
Gas-powered Class A coaches, which typically run Ford or Chevrolet V10 or V8 engines, return roughly 7 to 10 MPG under normal highway conditions. The larger and heavier the coach, the closer it sits to the bottom of that range. A 40-foot diesel pusher, by contrast, can achieve 9 to 12 MPG on flat interstates. Built on full-size or mid-size van platforms such as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, or Ram ProMaster, these compact coaches can achieve 18 to 25 MPG, with some diesel Sprinter-based builds doing even better on long highway runs.
The reasons are straightforward: smaller footprint, lighter curb weight, and a much more aerodynamic profile than a box-fronted Class A or C coach. Owners who drive conservatively and keep the load light often report staying at the high end of that range. Class C Motorhome MPG
Class C motorhomes occupy the middle ground in both size and fuel economy. They are built on cutaway van chassis from Ford, Ram, or Mercedes, which gives them a cab-over bunk above the driver area and a more familiar truck-like front end. Lengths range from about 20 to 33 feet, and weights typically fall between 10,000 and 16,000 pounds.
Fuel economy for a Class C sits in the 10 to 18 MPG range, with the actual figure depending heavily on the chassis, engine, and how heavily the coach is loaded. A compact 22-foot Class C on a Ford Transit chassis with a V6 engine can reach the upper teens. A 33-foot model on an older E-Series chassis with a big-block V8 will sit closer to 10 to 12 MPG. Diesel Class C options built on the Sprinter or Mercedes Benz platform tend to outperform their gas counterparts by a meaningful margin.
Diesel vs. Gas Engine: Which Delivers Better RV MPG?
Across all RV classes, diesel engines consistently deliver better fuel economy than comparable gasoline engines, typically in the range of 15 to 20 percent. Diesel’s advantage comes from higher energy density per gallon and the broader torque curve that diesel engines produce, which means the engine does not have to work as hard to maintain speed while pulling heavy loads up grades.
The trade-off is that diesel fuel costs more per gallon and diesel engines carry higher maintenance costs. But on a trip covering thousands of miles, the fuel savings from a diesel drivetrain can offset those costs. Many long-distance full-time RVers choose diesel pushers specifically because of lower per-mile fuel expenses over time.
How Weight Affects RV Fuel Economy
Every pound you add to an RV costs you fuel efficiency. As a general rule, adding 100 pounds to a vehicle reduces its fuel economy by approximately 1 percent. For a large Class A motorhome, that relationship means the difference between a lightly packed coach and one loaded to its gross vehicle weight rating can easily be 1 to 2 MPG.
